The good old days, i teported to the armory during GQ. If our ASROC was too hot, the ship yawed too far , the alarm sounded, if you were outside the skin of the ship, you'd better freeze in place. Our orders were clear, shoot to kill!! It was the Cold War.....1970, we were in the Indian Ocean , plenty of Soviet activity. Damn, i miss those days. I was a tincan sailor!! Dealy class...USS Vesole DD878!! May she rest in peace!!

Evan Bigelow (1923-2021), my father, served on the USS Woolsey from 1940 - 1946 (plank holder). His position was that of fireman in the uppermost cabin on the ship and his duty was to sight the cannons. No doubt he was involved firing the cannon shots in this video. He was always proud of his service on the Woolsey. After the war, he participated in the annual get togethers of the crew members up till the end, maybe around 1990's or so. After the war, the ship was moth-balled in South Carolina and the moved to the Navy shipyard in Boston and finally scrapped from there. Thank you for documenting this piece of history and those of the greatest generation who served.

It just so happens while I was assigned to the Kenndy I was in charge of the aft Eng Room. I do not remember any fricking way you could walk thru the FWD bulkhead to the AFT fire room, not very safe for watertight safety. I went aboard as a E-5 and after Fram and Cube I left for a DDG and was a E-6 with AC&R training. Got out after 10 years and loved every minute I was in ,even though I had racked up over 9 years Sea Duty.

I was stationed aboard the USS Ozbourn, DD-846 from 1973 to 1975, home port Portland, Oregon. We were sailing down the Coast of California when we hit a severe storm. She received a tremendous amount of damage, including 5 cracks in the hull below the waterline. The flooding was so bad that we were put into emergency drydock and once the damage was assessed, it was decided to decommission her. I had no idea this video existed but I am glad I found it. I was 14 years old when she was in this battle.

Thank You for serving in the United States Navy. My ship DD835 USS Charles P. Cecil, was there in Vietnam in 1972. During Linebacker operations, ships, including our ship the Cecil firing on targets close to shore, in North Vietnam took heavy fire from shore batteries. We were fortunate they did not have the range and the shells exploded nearby, causing flak to hit the ship. Many ships came under fire,it is very unfortunate that the USS Ozbourne got hit and it caused the loss of life of two sailors and injured three ,one seriously. In addition, I also had no idea this video existed. I now have it in My RUclips history, to save and honor those that served on the Ozboune in December 1967.

@@paulsmith2380 Thank You for your service and courage. I joined the Navy in 1972, boot camp in San Diego, then assigned to a brand new destroyer escort, the USS Brewton, DE-1086. I consider myself as a Vietnam Era Veteran but you are a true Vietnam Veteran and I truly thank you for your service. I transferred to the USS Ozbourn in 1973. She was a Reserve Status Destroyer home ported in Portland, Oregon until her decommissioning in 1974. She was replaced by the USS Hamner, DD-718 and about half the crew from the USS Ozbourn was transferred to her, including me and thats where I remained until I left the Navy. My biggest regret in life is that I didn't make a career in the Navy because it was the best six years of my life. I will be 71 the 20th of this month and I still regret not staying in the Navy. Again, Thank You for your service and smooth sailing to you Sir.

I was an FTG aboard USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 for deployments in 1970 and 1972. 70 was easy. 72 started out easy until the Easter offensive started. On Easter Sunday, April 2, 1970, Strauss and Buchanan DDG-14 provided Naval gunfire support while Captain John Ripley was planting explosives under Dong Ha Bridge. The Marines that were spotting for Strauss and Buchanan were trapped. It was a long day, but Captain Ripley was able to blow up the bridge and the Marine spotters were saved. A few days later it was off to firing at targets in N. Vietnam for the rest of the deployment. I think all of the DDG's that were deployed ended up off the coast of N. Vietnam. USN '71-'75. USS Wiltsie DD716, RVN 72-73. MMFN at the time. GQ station, Main Control Throttles. Enjoying all the Tin Can vids. Brings back memories of my time aboard this Greyhound.
